Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.
A wonderful hand-carved?jet pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! The pin is fairly large, and the bold, black jet has a?smoothly polished surface that leaves it with a lovely finish. The carved 3-dimensional design features a round knob in the center, which is surrounded by a decorative border formed by a series of squares. Each square has a small hole drilled in the center, completing the artistic design. On the back of the piece is a secure bar pin and c-catch, allowing it to be easily fastened to a favorite garment. A lovely jet piece with a very Victorian look, it would make a special addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pin has a 1 3/4" diameter and measures 7/8" at the thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin?is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the carved jet or to the bar pin and clasp, which is?secure and in good working condition.
